Division:  DD-Data Science

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Scientific Data Division has an opening for a User Interface Developer to join the team.

The Scientific Data Division fosters breakthrough discoveries through the application and development of novel data science methods, technologies, and infrastructures in partnership with science domain experts.

The Usable Data Systems (UDS) group in the Scientific Data Division has an immediate opening for a Computer Systems Engineer (CSE) who will join a team that is engaged in a wide array of research and development projects. This position will work with researchers and application scientists from the DOE Office of Science community, and faculty and students from universities both nationally and internationally, on a wide array of software development and data science problems serving the scientific mission. 

What You Will Do:

  • Design and develop, as part of diverse teams including domain scientists, software solutions to enable scientific research.
  • Participate in and/or lead the coordination of software development teams to deliver solutions on time and within budget.
  • Develop command-line interfaces, APIs, and graphical user interfaces with user experience (UX) methodologies and/or user interface (UI) technologies that meet scientific user requirements and needs.
  • Provide input to domain science and/or computer science research papers suitable for submission to peer-reviewed venues.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience; or three years and a Master’s degree; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Proficiency programming in JavaScript and exposure to other procedural or functional programming language(s).
  • Experience gathering user requirements and designing, developi ng, and evaluating user interfaces using modern approaches and technologies. .
  • Ability to conduct analysis and work independently.
  • Strong English written and oral communication.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience; or six years and a Master’s degree; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with the entire software development process, from requirements through design to implementation and deployment.
  • Proficiency programming in Python.
  • Experience with parallel and/or asynchronous programming.
  • Experience with cloud computing.
  • Experience with one or more JavaScript frameworks such as ReactJS or Angular.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience acting as a software project manager or software developer line manager.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams.

  • This is a full time, 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
